What Is Zero and Low-VOC Paint?

When it comes to interior and exterior painting, it is all too easy to find yourself buried in new terms and definitions. This can be the case for anyone, but especially for those who are just starting to lay the groundwork of research for their next home painting project.

As you look into brands of paint and the numerous colors and sheens that follow along after them, you might stumble across a term you aren’t familiar with: low-VOC or zero-VOC paint. So, what exactly is this stuff?

Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Paint

If you enjoy chemistry you can really dig into the definition of what these kinds of paint offer. The short version, however, is that VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. VOC’s are created and dispersed into the air by a number of sources (both natural and man-made), and some are more damaging to our health and the environment than others.

VOC’s are generally used in the solvent that helps to keep paint in a liquid state. After all, nobody has really ever been excited to open a can of paint and find a solid rather than a liquid! When the paint is applied, the VOC’s evaporate, and in turn the paint can dry fully.

Low and zero-VOC paint is a great answer for those who are extra sensitive to paint fumes, or for those who simply are interested in understanding the most environmentally-friendly options. And, never fear, even with the lower amount of VOC’s, the paint is still durable and will cure very well.
