The instinct to make a place your own shows up very early in our lives. We want our own space, whether it’s a quiet retreat in the woods, a corner to read, or an office at the top of a skyscraper. For a lot of kids, it starts in their own bedroom, filling their shelves and covering their bureaus with what matters to them, and what represents their interests, passions, and favorite colors.
As a parent, knowing how to choose, or help them choose, a bedroom paint color can be a little tricky. With this in mind, we’ve put together a few tips to help you paint and decorate your child’s room.
What Are the Best Bedroom Colors for Kids?
In short, the best colors are the ones that last. What we mean by this is that while it can be fun to pick a very babyish palette when your little one is tiny, those infant-specific colors often just don’t last quite as long as others will. Instead, why not go with a more neutral interior color; something that isn’t bland, but that can also grow up with your child through strategic decorating.
A soft green, for example, can fit the decor of a nursery very well when it’s accented by those warm, almost candy-like colors found on baby blankets and stuffed animals. As your child grows, however, that same color can be matured with bright, bold, fun accents.
NON-PERMANENT Wall Decorations
Rather than take a flying leap into the world of wallpapers and borders, there are a lot of really awesome decals, stickers, and other removable wall decorations out there for you to consider. This will allow you to customize the style according to your child’s growing and ever-changing interests (eventually those teddy bears will need to turn into race cars) without dealing with a much larger project.
Let Your Kids Help with Picking Their Paint Colors
Before you skip right over this idea for fear of the wild options they might choose, consider these strategies:
- Take the color they choose, then tone it down a little. If they ask for a wild, hot pink, for example, just choose a lighter, softer hue.
- Or, take the color they want and paint only an accent wall. It can be more easily changed than an entire room, but it also earns you all the cool points.
