Which Kind of Paint Is Best for a Ceiling?

When it comes to interior painting, walls typically steal the show. They also might steal the majority of your attention! This all makes sense since that’s where the primary color is located, creating a natural focal point.

We’ll save all of the considerations related to choosing wall paint for another post. To hold you over, you might be interested in taking a look at our recent article: Should I Paint My Walls or Trim First?

Let’s talk about ceilings for a second. Since they’re overhead, they can feel a little out-of-sight, out-of-mind, but they are important to strategically consider.

Choosing the Right Sheen for Your Ceiling

choosing ceiling color and sheen

“Sheen” is determined by the level of gloss that your paint offers. Is it flat, satin, eggshell, semi-gloss, or high-gloss? The progression from flat to high-gloss paint offers an incremental increase in both the levels of reflectivity and durability.

So, what does this mean for your ceiling?

A ceiling doesn’t often require extremely durable paint because it simply doesn’t experience a lot of traffic. Unless you have an extraordinarily tall family (or extraordinarily low ceilings), you probably don’t need to worry about finger smudges, scuffs, or washing off crayon and marker.

This means that flat paint is one of the go-to options for ceilings. It covers the surface well, is very forgiving of any imperfections, and it doesn’t draw a lot of attention to itself.

If you want to add a little extra brightness to your interior space, however, consider upping your gloss just a bit by choosing a satin finish.

Choosing the Best Ceiling Color

You can certainly paint your ceiling any color you like, but typically light colors are chosen because it creates the illusion of a taller space. Also, a light ceiling is brighter, feels more open, and offers a needed break and contrast from your walls. A darker choice can quickly make a room feel like a box unless it’s a very unique area.
