Exterior paint is an investment! We don’t mean this only in a financial sense, but also in the sense that your paint has specific tasks to do that will ideally yield a return. It protects, enhances, and prolongs the lifespan of your exterior surfaces.
These are all hugely important!
It stands to reason then that before you decide whether or not to paint your home’s exterior, you want to be sure that you are doing all you can to ensure that your paint will last just as long as possible.
So, circling back to the original question: how long does exterior paint last? Well, it depends on a number of factors. No two situations are identical because of differing age, environments, products used, etc. As a general rule of thumb, however, you can expect well-applied exterior paint to last at least five years, and often longer.
Giving Your Paint a Long and Healthy Life
While those environmental factors we mentioned may be a bit of a wild card, there are a few things that you can do to give your paint the very best shot at longevity.
- Invest in quality paint – Finding a great deal can be fun, but at the end of the day quality products always show their true value. Take a look at our previous article to learn more about why this is true.
- Choose a quality painter – You can always tackle the project yourself if you’re feeling ambitious, but unless you have a lot of painting knowledge and experience you might not be setting yourself up for optimum success.
- Product consistency – There are two primary varieties of paint that you will encounter: oil-based and latex (water-based). Switching from one to the other without employing the proper techniques can result in product failure (watching your paint peel is never fun!).
- Surface preparation – This is the foundation of a long-lasting project. Making necessary repairs, scraping, cleaning, and using primer as needed are all essential steps.
