How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets

New Life Painting goes through a step-by-step process to ensure that kitchen cabinets are painted in a way that makes them look like they were finished in the factory. Kitchen remodeling is one of the most expensive upgrades that a homeowner can make today. However, those costs can be greatly offset by having your kitchen cabinets painted or refaced. Because the cabinets are the main focal point in the kitchen, painting the cabinets is the best way to improve the appearance of your kitchen area and increase the value of your home.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets – The Step-by-Step Approach

New Life Painting follows a specific process to ensure that kitchen cabinets are painted almost flawlessly. First, the inside of the cabinets are masked off before they are cleaned, de-glossed and sanded.

Prepping and Painting the Inside Cabinets

A coat of primer is applied before the inside of the seams, joints and corners of the inside cabinets are caulked. This process ensures a factory-looking finish as it eliminates seams or gaps. Clean-up follows for the day. A top coat is sprayed and applied to the inside of the cabinets the following day.

Prepping and Painting the Cabinet Drawers

The painters then remove the hardware from the drawers and doors of the cabinetry (hinges, knobs, and pulls). The drawers of the cabinets are cleaned, de-glossed and sanded before the primer application. Usually one coat of primer is applied for every two coats of paint. The seams, joints and corners of the doors are then caulked before the topcoat is applied.

Prepping and Painting Cabinet Doors

The doors of the cabinets are prepped and painted in the same manner as the drawers. The front of the doors are cleaned, de-glossed and sanded and the same process is followed on the flip-side. A coat of primer is applied before caulking the door. After the primer has been applied to the back of the door, the painters paint the kitchen walls while they wait for the finish to dry.

Finalizing the Job

Once the paint has dried, the painters install the hardware on the doors and drawers in order to rehang them and put them back in place.
